The honest version

Why Goa works for couples

Goa splits cleanly in two, and for couples the south is almost always the answer. Palolem, Agonda and Cavelossim have wide quiet beaches, low-rise resorts and a pace that suits three or four nights.

The north still has the best food and the most interesting old houses. A day spent in Assagao, Siolim and the Fontainhas quarter in Panjim gives the trip its texture without giving up the quiet.

Because flights are short and frequent, Goa is the destination couples come back to. It works as a spontaneous long weekend, an anniversary, or a first trip together before committing to something further away.

What couples do here

  • Beach-shack lunches through North Goa
  • Old Goa's basilicas and the spice plantations inland
  • Palolem and the southern beaches
  • Mandovi river sunsets

When to visit Goa

  • Nov – FebidealPerfect beach weather. Peak rates over New Year.
  • Mar – MaygoodHot and humid but very quiet and well priced.
  • Jun – SepshoulderMonsoon. Spectacular greenery, most shacks shut.
  • OctidealThe shoulder sweet spot — green landscape, clearing skies.

Three things we tell every couple about Goa

      1. 1

Monsoon closes most shacks from June

the green is beautiful and the beaches are not

      2. 2

Hire a car with a driver rather than a scooter if you are crossing between north and south

      Common questions

      Goa, answered

North Goa or South Goa for couples?
South, in almost every case. It is quieter, the beaches are wider and the resorts are better spaced. Keep one evening for the north to eat well and see the old houses.
Is a monsoon trip to Goa a bad idea?
Not at all, if you know what you are booking. The state is at its greenest, rates fall sharply and the light is extraordinary. Just expect swimming to be limited and many beach shacks to be closed.
How long should a Goa trip be?
Three nights is a genuine break and four is ideal. Beyond five nights, most couples pair it with a few nights inland at Dudhsagar or across the border in Karnataka.
