The honest version

Why Kerala works for couples

Kerala moves at a different speed to the rest of the country, and couples notice it within a day. The classic route runs from the tea estates of Munnar down through the Periyar hills into the backwaters at Alleppey, finishing on the coast near Kochi or Marari.

The houseboat night is the centrepiece. You board in the afternoon, the boat moors somewhere quiet before dark, and dinner is cooked on board while the light goes out of the water.

It is also one of the few Indian itineraries that is genuinely good in the monsoon. June to August is when Ayurvedic treatment centres do their most serious work, and the landscape is at its most dramatic.

What couples do here

  • Overnight houseboat out of Alleppey
  • Tea estates and the drive up to Munnar
  • Fort Kochi's Chinese nets and the Jew Town lanes

    Common questions

    Kerala, answered

How many nights does a Kerala honeymoon need?
Six nights covers Munnar, Thekkady, a houseboat and the coast. Five works if you drop one hill station, and eight lets you add a proper stretch of beach time at Marari or Kovalam.
    Is a Kerala houseboat private?
Yes — the standard couple booking is a full boat with one bedroom, a crew of two or three and a cook. You are not sharing with other travellers.
Can we visit Kerala during the monsoon?
You can, and many couples deliberately do. Expect heavy rain in bursts, exceptional greenery, much lower rates and the best conditions of the year for Ayurvedic treatment.
